I'm a visual designer, artist, and writer helping people see a sustainable, beautiful future.

  • Your brand is how you decorate your living room, the clothes you wear, the art on your wall, what you cook for guests, the music you play for them. It’s how you welcome others into your world and worldview. I help turn bare business plans and amorphous ideas into:

    • Punchy, poetic topline messages (vision, mission, approach, etc) that show the heart of what you do

    • Visual identity systems that build a beautiful, unique world around your work

  • I specialize in taking complicated, technical, longwinded, fluffy, or otherwise unruly writing and turning it into engaging prose with equal parts substance and flair.

    • Op eds

    • Whitepapers

    • Reports

    • Toolkits

    • Published research

    • Grant and bid writing

    • Proofreading and editing

  • You could Midjourney it, but… should you? Firstly, I use a lot less water. Secondly, generative AI art is by definition average and unoriginal (for now at least). I’m an accomplished artist and illustrator in a range of physical and digital media including watercolor, acrylic, printmaking, pencil, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I LOVE the process of teasing out the aesthetic that resonates most deeply with you, your work, and your community.

  • I can help with all of your day-to-day graphic design needs, including…

    • 1/2/3/4/… pagers

    • Reports

    • Social graphics

    • Slide decks

    • Email banners

    • Stationery

    • Swag

I’ve also tackled a couple of website design projects from initial site mapping and information hierarchy through to final mockups and developer support.

  • Good video marries visual and verbal storytelling, rhythm and color, information and entertainment - it’s a delicious challenge. I handle end-to-end video production:

    • Scripting and storyboarding

    • Animated character design

    • Motion graphics/animation (not a whizz, but can do pretty good job)

    • Editing

    • Coordinating with sound/voice talent/other creative team

  • I offer creative direction for events that connect and inspire people, leading from initial brand development through to wayfinding and stage/scenic graphics as well as video, marketing, app design support and photography direction.

  • Being able to see and understand data from all angles is key to implementing effective change. But dataviz is often totally boring and/or overwhelming to look at. I help sort through the mess to find a clear, step-by-step story in dataviz and infographics.

Bio

Over the last two years I’ve been a consultant at the US Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, which has catalyzed an unstoppable clean energy transition with transformative debt financing. I create an array of print and digital materials to promote our programs and the high-impact energy projects we finance, and to support the cross-office Pathways to Liftoff reports. I also lead branding and design for our annual Deploy conference, managing creative production of all our digital, print, and environmental graphics.

As a freelance designer I’ve worked with clients in international development, human services, and climate advocacy on brand identity systems, animated videos, illustrations, educational materials, marketing collateral, and reports. Oh, and then there’s a writer who keeps asking me to do weird things like “draw an ant that looks like it’s about to F you up.”

In a previous life I was Development and Communications Coordinator at an amazing nonprofit urban design firm called Kounkuey Design Initiative. While I worked there I co-authored the World Bank Handbook for Gender Inclusive Planning and Design as well as a research paper on community-led infrastructure in Kibera, Kenya. I’ve also consulted for a domestic abuse foundation, co-writing and designing an e-course, guidebook, webinar series, and other educational materials as well as helping with fundraising and making this video.

I'm a lifelong multimedia artist, constantly fascinated by the textures and forms found in the natural world - a product of my upbringing in the gorgeous Dartmoor National Park in southwest England. Watercolor was my first love but nowadays I’m obsessed with printmaking!

My impulse is to weave together, to make things coherent, to help make them real. We live in an ever more fragmented, alienated world, and I’m sure that’s not the right direction to go in. There needs to be more gravity. I love taking amorphous and complex problem statements, aesthetic visions, and value propositions and playing with them until they coalesce into something inspiring and that feels just right. There are so many wonderful people out there doing huge things together to build a sustainable, beautiful future for humanity. I’m here to help visualize and verbalize those things so we all know what we’re doing and why.
