City of John Day

The City of John Day in Oregon is a small town with a rich history in mining, lumber, and ranching. It is home to the celebrated Kam Wah Chung store, run by two Chinese immigrants who came to the US during the gold rush. I worked with Straw to Gold, an Oregon-based marketing agency, to help turn some of the best-loved stories of the town into an illustrated children’s book.

The book includes a story about a boy’s turkey whose feathers turn to gold, a girl who is cured by Doc Hay after a terrible accident, a mischievous toddler who gives his parents a fright when he goes to sleep with the pigs, and a fawn who saves a man’s life.
