Kibera Public Space Project
The Kibera Public Space Project is a network of 11 public spaces in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi. Each is co-designed, built, and managed by local community groups in partnership with nonprofit Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI).
I designed a book to celebrate the 10 year anniversary since the first KPSP site was completed. The playful design is inspired by the colours and dense, informal architecture of Kibera. It also calls to mind the “concept design” stage of KDI’s participatory process, in which residents are invited to develop the layout of their public space using colour-coded pieces of card to represent the different site elements.
